Naked Lunch

naked lunch I had to get really creative, or at least desperate, with what was packed this morning in my kids’ lunches. Without bread, the sandwiches would be a bit, well, naked.

You see, last night we never did get to the grocery store, so we are out of basics, such as bread, milk and dark chocolate. Yikes. Okay, so the dark chocolate was for me, but we do normally incorporate bread and milk somewhere in meals for our children.

Typically, I am an uber-planner, well, an uber-planner wanna be. I haven’t yet obtained my certificate or badge, and the phrase “let it go” still bothers me. My home is not Martha Stewart organized (yet), and I don’t have three years worth of food and emergency supplies stockpiles (probably never). I do however have lots of lists and make liberal use of a little program on my computer called “stickies.” (Virtual sticky notes! Genius!)

I also have three children who are the definition of chaos on feet and a couple of cats who scoff at my lists and consider them shred toys.

All of this explanation is to set you up to rationalize along with me when I tell you what I did this morning. I padded into the kitchen in the early am. Usually I grab a cup of coffee and a handful of cereal (hey, it is important not to skip breakfast), and then get on the computer for a couple of hours of work before the rest of the house stirs. Somewhere in there, either my husband or I make lunches for the kids to pack.

This morning, of course, there was no bread.

A good mom might have stayed up all night making bread and then cutting the sandwiches into profiles of Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games. A good mom might have run out to the convenience store in her cute and stylish pajamas to buy bread.

I did neither of these things. Dressed in my husband’s tattered and discarded Looney Toons sweat shirt and my old plaid, cotton shorts, I pulled out frozen chocolate chip pancakes and slapped some peanut butter between the them. Instant sandwiches. I figure the pancakes will thaw by lunch time. Then I went back to work.

Hey! At least the pancakes were homemade…right? Help me out here.
