National Men Make Dinner Day: Husbands, Hit the Kitchen!

Wayne’s not here to cook for me tonight, but if he was I’d make sure we honored this day. (Which, in case you didn’t know it, is National Men Make Dinner Day.)

“Are you kidding me?”

‘Fraid not, sweetheart. We may be living in modern times, and some husbands do take on the task of cooking for their wives and families on a regular basis.

But notice the use of the word “some.” Not “most.” That means there’s still a lot of men out there who enjoy the benefit of a wife-prepared meal and never raise a finger to help.

If you’re one of them, please consider giving her a break tonight and preparing dinner for her for a change. As a wife who regularly is in charge of meals, I know what a delight it would be to relinquish this duty for one night.

“What do I have to do?”

Great question! There are in fact rules. Twelve of them to be exact, but I’ll list only the most important ones.

• You have to use a recipe. If push comes to shove you can use one from your wife’s collection, but it’s strongly encouraged you get one from someplace like the Internet. (Hint: Check out Families.com’s Food section for all kinds of tasty recipes.)

• A minimum of four ingredients is required, as is cooking with one utensil other than a fork.

• You’re not only doing the meal prep and cooking, you have to shop for the ingredients yourself too.

• You’re in charge of clean-up duty as well.

Bonus Points

Think of this as a game. You get bonus points for stuff like:

• Voluntarily agreeing to participate in National Men Make Dinner Day without being bribed with the promise of a boys’ night out or some other you-centered activity.

• Getting a recipe from somewhere other than her collection.

• Checking out the pantry and fridge for items already on hand that your recipe calls for before you go shopping.

• Setting the table in a romantic fashion. (i.e. candles burning, maybe a fresh flower centerpiece, setting a table somewhere other than the dining room table, like out in the backyard or on the roof of your apartment building, etc.)
