Applying for Energy Assistance

applying for energy assistance There are many programs out there that can help you if you need energy assistance. Some of these programs are state or local government funded, some are privately funded, and some are funded by energy companies.

If you need energy assistance this winter, you’ll want to apply to one or several of these programs, depending on where you live and what your situation happens to be. Many other families may also be applying. In order to up your chances of being selected for energy assistance, you will need to be prepared with the information that will need to go on your application.

Most programs will require proof of income for the last three to twelve months.

If you are receiving benefits from Social Security, you can request a Proof on Income Letter through the website. You’ll want to get this done as soon as possible, since it could take 10 days or more to get the letter.

Generally, most programs will make you eligible if your total household income falls within 60 percent of the state median income. You also may qualify if you have a family member living at the residence who is at high risk of complications from cold, such as the elderly or a young child.

You will also need to be prepared with the social security numbers of every member of your household.

Also prepare to have proof of your current residence, such as a deed, a lease or a property tax bill.

Another few things you will need when you apply for energy assistance are a recent copy of your energy and utility bills, and the type of fuel that you use, such as oil, propane, natural gas, wood, coal, etc.

To make sure you are prepared, read the application throughly before you apply. This way your application won’t be rejected for lack of the proper information.
