New Year’s Resolution: Growing Spiritually

If you have decide to increase your spirituality as one of your New Year’s resolutions, this is a great goal. You can do many things to help you draw closer to the Lord. However you may want to be careful as you pray. Often when I have prayed for increased strength, faith or knowledge, I have been blessed with a trial to help me grow stronger. Here are some things you can do to better your relationship with the Lord this year.

1) Study the scriptures and the words of the prophets this year. There is no better way to learn the things that you can do to grow closer to the Lord. If you set aside thirty minutes a day to study, you will be amazed at the growth that you have in your faith and spirituality. Choose a time that works well for you. If you write down your thoughts as you read, you will find that your insights will increase.

2) Take the time serve others. You may start each day with a prayer that you may find some way to serve that day or you may want to set aside time on a weekly or monthly basis to serve in the community or church. This time will help you to focus on others rather than on yourself. It is a great opportunity to develop love for others.

3) Take time to pray every day. You should strive to focus on the things that you are saying, and taking time to kneel in prayer in solitude. This will give you the opportunity to listen as well as to speak. Your heart will be touched and your faith will be strengthened as you learn to use the wonderful gift of prayer. You can feel the love that the Savior has for you as you pray.

4) Another thing you may need to learn to do to increase your spirituality is to look for the blessings in each situation that you are in. This can make a huge difference in your attitude. If you feel neglected, alone or depressed over trials, this can lead to anger and bitterness, which can drive you away from the Lord. If you look and dwell on the positive you will find yourself growing closer to the Lord. You can start by listing three positive things each day.
