No More Carpet!

I may have mentioned this before, but I’ll say it again. I hate to vacuum. I don’t know why. It’s one of those jobs that I really don’t like, so I don’t do it as often as I should. The result is carpet that looks terrible and is worn before it’s time. It’s important to vacuum your carpet daily, this keeps the dirt from getting ground in and ruining the carpet.

I know, I know, just run the vacuum and be done with it, but I just can’t make myself do it. I would rather clean every toilet in the house, every day, than vacuum. If I am being totally honest, I probably only vacuum about once a month. This is terrible for your carpet, I get that, but I don’t really like carpet all that much anyway.

I want it all gone. Yes, I know how much work it is to maintain other types of flooring but I don’t care, I really don’t like carpet. I don’t mind sweeping and mopping. I know its more work than vacuuming but I really don’t mind it. I have even been known to clean my kitchen floor on my hands and knees.
I’ve been doing some research on the internet because although I don’t like my carpet, I do try to be green. Bamboo flooring seems to be the way to go, it is sustainable and grows much faster than traditional hardwoods. It takes about 100 years for a tree to mature but it only takes about three to five years for bamboo to grow enough to be harvested for flooring. I love the look of hardwood floors but really don’t want trees to be cut down so I can walk on them.

Bamboo flooring, if it is sealed properly, is as easy to maintain as other laminates with less effect on the environment. I think it’s time to start ripping up this carpet and little by little replace it with bamboo. I will offer the carpet on freecycle so it doesn’t go to the landfill and someone else can use it for the rest of it is useful life. I might even through in that pesky vacuum.
