Imagine if your little bun in the oven came out as a whopping loaf of bread.
That’s sort of what Janet Johnson experienced a few days ago.
The Lone Star State mom got a Texas-sized surprise last Friday morning when she delivered a 16-pound, 1-ounce baby boy measuring two feet long.
Within hours of her son’s birth, the mom of three older children (ages 10 to 18) became an instant celebrity. According to news reports, Johnson’s fourth child landed in the record books as the largest baby ever born in the state of Texas.
Baby JaMichael was born at 9:05 a.m. via scheduled Cesarean section weighing more than four pounds over what doctors had previously predicted. Johnson’s doctor estimated that she would give birth to an 11 or 12-pound chunk. Instead, she and JaMichael’s dad, Michael Brown were floored when they saw their 16-pound mini sumo wrestler emerge into the world with a full head of hair and a butt so large that the hospital’s nursery didn’t have diapers big enough to fit him.
According to doctors, JaMichael is as large as a normal four of five-month-old.
“We’re just amazed,” Johnson told news reporters. “I can’t believe he’s that big. A lot of the baby clothes we bought for him will have to be returned. They’re already too small for him to wear.”
For the record, Johnson did suffer with gestational diabetes during her pregnancy, and according to reports, JaMichael will spend the next few days in the neonatal intensive care unit in order to regulate his blood sugar. Still, doctors say the big boy is otherwise healthy and should be able to go home soon.
While JaMichael didn’t make The Guinness Book of Records, which features a 23-pound baby born in 1879 to a Canadian mother, as the largest newborn in the world, the Texas newborn is still living large.
