Older Child Adoption

Last week was National Adoption Day! National Adoption Day is a day to celebrate the adoption and finalization of children adopted from foster care. I mention this because I was watching a Wednesday Child story on the news and there was 2 beautiful sisters that were looking for a forever family. They are in separate foster homes because the state cannot find a home willing to take both a 10 year old and a 12 year old.

The girls are smart, wanting to be together and want a forever family and the sad truth is that they will most likely never get a forever family. They will most likely be in the foster care system until they age out at 18. These girls have been in the foster care system for years already and they are still waiting. My daughter who is 9 looked at me and asked if they could come to live with us. Well first I love my daughter she has such a big heart she is amazing.

I had to explain to her that we just do not have enough bed rooms for 5 kids and besides mommy and daddy may go a bit crazy with more kids. I know there are so many families wanting to adopt babies or toddlers but why is it that more people will not open their hearts and homes to an older child? I swear if we won the lotto and bought a bigger house we would have more kids not as many as the Duggars’ but more than the 3 we have.

I know that when people think about adopting older kids they think they all have problems. I know there are kids that do have some problems but wouldn’t you? If you were put in a temporary home waiting for a forever family for a long time, if you were kept away from your siblings and all your old belongings would you not be upset?

There are so many sibling groups and older kids just waiting for forever families please consider them when you consider adoption. With older kids you can meet them, get to know them and usually will find an incredible kid just waiting for a family to call their own.

About Tammy Woolard

My name is Tammy and I am 40 year old mother of 3 wonderful children who came to us through domestic adoption. Although we did not have any fertility issues we chose adoption because there are so many kids that did not ask to be born but truly want a family to love. We did research on adoption choices and decided on domestic adoption through CPS. You would be surprised the differences between each agency. The adoption process is nothing like you see in the movies. I am also a 5 year breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed my kids were 3, 5 and 7 I did so much research I may have driven my Dr. a little crazy but that is ok it is my body not his.
