Once Upon a Time Recap: Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide

I confess that Once Upon a Time has become one of my new favorite shows, because it brings fairy tales to a whole new…reality. In case you haven’t watch the series yet, let me catch up up on the premise. In a land far, far away, and evil queen puts a curse on the land of familiar fairy tale characters. Everyone is then transported to the modern world, where they live their lives together, never aging, unaware of their fantastic history. As they play their lives out, only one little soul, Henry, knows the real deal, and he strives to bring about the right people and circumstances to break the curse.

In the last episode od Once Upon a Time, Cinderella was saved from having to give her baby up to Rumplestilskin (AKA Mr. Gold, who brokers in babies among other things), Prince Charming emerges from his coma to find that he has an estranged wife that he doesn’t remember, and Snow White (Mary Margaret) tries to deny her feelings for the prince, while their grown daughter Emma (that they don’t realize is their daughter) battles wits with the evil queen, who is also the mayor, Regina. Follow me so far? Don’t worry, Once Upon a Time leads you in, and although each episode can stand alone, they all lead the story along nicely.

In last night’s episode, we learn all about the gentle Jiminy Cricket, AKA Mr. Hopper, and how he came to be who he is, a therapist in the modern town of Storybrook. Born to conniving parent who prey on others, he finds himself going along with a scam that turns a little boys parents into puppets. We find out later that the little boy is Gepetto, himself. Henry, as a matter of fact, tells him the deal. “You’re a conscience. You help people see right from wrong.” This is just what Hopper needs to find his own conscience and do the right thing, making a stand against Regina.

Of course, we can’t forget the explosion, which exposes old mining tunnels. Henry, convinced that these tunnels lead to another world, goes ahead and explores them. Hopper, putting his own safety aside, goes after him, giving the two the opportunity for a hear to heart, while Emma, now deputy, has to work with Regina in order to get Henry (and Hopper) out safely, which she does.

The sound of crickets, never before heard in Story Brook, brightens up the night, and all is happy, at least for a little while in Story Brook.

But what were those mysterious glass-like pieces that came out of the mining tunnels? As Regina purposely drops the piece that she found, we get the hint that she probably is aware of the curse and her life back in Fairy Tale.
