Another thing to talk about and one of the best things you can do for your marriage is study the bible together. As a start, I suggest getting a concordance and looking up husbands, wives and marriage and finding out what God has to say on these subjects. It will give you a clear picture of the way marriage should be.
But don’t stop here. Make it a regular habit to study the bible and pray together. Meet with other married couples who are studying the same passages of scripture you are. It’s a great way of building enduring friendships, as well as helping your marriage. Each week in our home we have a study group that meets. Ten of the twelve people who come to our bible study group come with their marriage partners.
It is a time for studying God’s Word together and praying for each other and for things that are happening in our lives. As well as praying for each other and for our church, we pray for the wider community and world. Needless to say, given the natural disasters of floods, cyclones and bushfires happening in our land of Australia at present there was time devoted to praying for the people and families affected by these things.
Mick and I usually sit down together at some stage during the week and answer our bible study questions. It is good to read the bible together and bounce ideas off each other first before sharing them with the rest of the group. That way God is getting more than one chance to talk to us.
Of course the whole principle of reading the bible is so that God can speak to us and change us to be the people he wants to be. That means taking note of what God is saying to us and acting upon it –making changes in our lives.
Since ‘God is love’ what better source to go to for help and strengthening of our marriage?
