In Search of Velveeta

I was at the store today and I had decided to make my favorite taco salad recipe. I had my lettuce, olives, ground beef, Doritos, Ro*tel tomatoes – all I needed was Velveeta for my Ro*tel dip and I was set.

At the end of the vegetable aisle, I found a small package of Velveeta. This was possibly because it was near the Ro*tel (although it was on the opposite end). Unfortunately, I needed a larger size to make my dip. So I walk up and down each aisle, looking for Velveeta. Sometimes, I find it near the potato chips, maybe because of the famous Ro*tel Cheese dip. But at this grocery store, one I do not frequent very often, there was no Velveeta.

Now, to me, the logical choice would be somewhere near the other cheese. I mean after all, it is called Velveeta cheese! For those that do not know, Velveeta has been around for almost 80 years. Kraft Corporation introduced the pasteurized process cheese way back in 1928. Believe it or not, Velveeta was the first cheese product to get the American Medical Association’s seal of approval. By 1952, Kraft had redesigned Velveeta, taking away fat and calories, but still retaining the nutritional value. Today, Velveeta is so popular, it comes in slices (regular and extra thick), shredded form (in original, mild Mexican, and hot Mexican), shells and cheese dinners, even microwavable cheese sauce.

And I could find all of these, just not the original large box of Velveeta. After looking near the cheese, the chips, the nuts, the canned cheese, and back down the Ro*tel aisle, I finally gave up. I took the smaller box of Velveeta that I could find and headed home to make my taco salad.
