Organizing Your Genealogy Information

Genealogy research sure does create a lot of “stuff”. Whether you are just starting out on your family history research or you have been researching for a while, you have more than likely notice that you have a lot of piles of paper and other things that are accumulating as you progress in your quest for information about your ancestors. The question of what to do to organize all of your genealogy “stuff” can be overwhelming, depending upon how much “stuff” you have. It is not impossible though, and the sooner you get everything organized and stored in a way that has some sense of order, the sooner you will realize that all of the research that you have done is much more useful when you know how to locate a specific piece of information among the hundreds or thousands of pieces of information that you have.

Perhaps the most important part of deciding what kind of system to use to organize your genealogy information is deciding what you need and what kind of organizing system will meet those needs. If a system is a poor fit for you, you are unlikely to use it and your paperwork will not get organized. If, on the other hand, you choose something that you will use consistently for every paper every time, then you will always be able to find what you need when you want to find it.

Fortunately, there are a plethora of ways that you can organize your genealogy “stuff”. This ensures that whoever you are, you can find something that will work for you. Whether you choose binders, folders, or some form of electronic data organizing matters much less than whether you actually use the system. There are even multiple ways of storing information for the larger organizational concepts like folders. You can sort information into folders by surname, by individuals, couples, events and so on. Your best bet may be to just start looking at some of the stuff that you have. Perhaps looking at the kind of information you have will inspire an idea for how to organize it. Only you know which way is best for organizing your genealogy files.
