Overcoming Struggles with Action

What is your biggest fitness struggle? I would guess we all have them.

For some it is feeling like you will never achieve your desired weight or pants size. For others it is the inability to stick with a program. And then there are those (myself included) who struggle with consistency.

Here is the problem with the struggles—besides the fact that it is a struggle—we tend to focus more on those than what we are doing right. We look at the glass as half empty, instead of half full.

So what is the key to overcoming your fitness struggles? It is one word…action.

Too often we bemoan our struggles but don’t do anything to change them. If you do nothing, nothing will change. So you need to take action.

Let’s consider some of the struggles previously mentioned, starting with the belief you will never achieve your desired weight or pants size. Well, part of your action plan is going to be evaluating whether or not your goals are realistic.

If you are in your 40’s and your hope is to look like you did in high school, this is probably not realistic. So make sure you aren’t aiming too high.

You should also consider whether you are striving for too much too soon. In other words, is your goal to lose five pounds every single week? You might want to reduce that goal to a pound or two every week.

What about the struggle with sticking to a program? The problem is that today we have so many options when it comes to fitness. New products, gadgets, apps and fitness classes are constantly available. It can make your head spin.

Your action plan should be to stick to something if it is working and you enjoy it. Don’t jump at the newest thing “just because.” Save yourself some money and wait until others have tried it first.

Finally, let’s address the struggle with consistency. Maybe you just need to sit down and write out
a workable schedule. Not having a plan is a surefire way to lose motivation.

Take into consideration the best time of day to exercise. Put some variety into your fitness regime.

Whatever your struggle, you can overcome it…with action.
