Yesterday was apparently International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Unfortunately I didn’t run around saying argh and avast ye matey or whatever else it is that pirates are infamous for saying. My favorite pirate, Captain Hook, was more likely to respond to a Tick Tock than he was to ahoy matey!
Disney announced yesterday that they were planning the DVD release for the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest for December 5th just in time for Christmas. This film has been breaking records since it’s release including the highest theatrical opening weekend in U.S. box office history and becoming Disney’s biggest money maker of all time by crossing the billion dollar profit mark.

Disney Home Entertainment has also launched their Dead Man’s Mail as part of their overall celebration of pirates and piracy in general. The site is interactive and you can find tips on how to talk like a true pirate and you can even send a customizable animated pirate email with pirate swagger to your friends.
Disney Pirates
There have been a number of rather infamous pirates to show up in Disney films, beginning with their most famous (before Captain Jack Sparrow) anyway and that’s Captain Hook. Captain Hook was the nemesis of Peter Pan and he was very much afraid of the crocodile that snapped off his hand. In the place of the hand he wore a very fierce hook – hence the name Captain Hook.
We’ve seen many incarnations of Captain Hook over the years both in and out of Disney films. The animated Captain Hook is probably one of the most well known. A caricature of him appeared in the second Shrek film as a piano player in a roguish tavern.
So while this is a bit of a day late, but not a dollar short – remember to celebrate your favorite pirate.
