If you read my recent rant regarding celebrities and their bizarre baby naming rituals, then you might not be surprised to hear that the trend appears to be growing among common folk.
Case in point: Some Swedish parents are currently fighting the government for the “privilege” of naming their child after the 17th letter of the alphabet.
No kidding! The stalwart parents want Swedish officials to amend a law created in 1982, so that they can keep calling their kid “Q.”
Apparently, the eclectic mom and dad have been calling their son Q since he was born. However, Swedish law prohibits names that consist of only one letter.
In their argument to court officials, the boy’s parents maintained that their son answers to the name Q, and despite what has been published in the media, they did not name the boy after the popular figure from the James Bond films. Rather, Q’s mom and dad insist that their decision to name their child after a single letter was done at the last minute (really?), and the moniker has since grown on them. What’s more, the boy’s parent say, “There are stranger names in the valley.”
The boy’s parent’s argument to Sweden’s Supreme Administrative Court included a note saying that they would consider the alternative name of “Q:u” should officials deny them the right to keep the boy’s one letter name.
I fully admit that I know nothing about Swedish law, and whether a case like this requires people like Q’s parents to fork over big bucks to have their argument heard. If taxpayers are footing the court tab I can see why Q’s parents are fighting it so vehemently. On the other hand, if I were a taxpayer paying for this cr*p to be heard by Sweden’s high court I would be peeved.
As for Q’s parents I would simply suggest this: Add a “u” and an “e” to the end of your son’s name and get on with your lives.
That said, do you think naming a child after a single letter in the alphabet should be against the law?
