The main part to Passover is the Seder. The word Seder means order and if you have ever been to a Passover Seder, you have observed the order which is followed. It begins with speaking and teaching about the Seder plate and what each symbol means and ends with songs and praises about celebrating next Pesach in Jerusalem (for the Jews in America).
In the US, Jews celebrate with a Passover Seder for the first two nights while in Israel, Jews only celebrate for one night.
The Haggadah is the book which is read at the Seder table and explains the entire story of Moses and the Exodus from Egypt and what the Passover offering was. Another explanation o the Haggadah is a step by step guide on how to run your Passover Seder.
It is broken into different sections ranging from traditional customs of saying blessings over wine to singing Psalms and songs.
One song which is well known and children love to sing is called, “Dayenu.” Dayenu is Hebrew and in English means, “It would have been enough.” This speaks about everything the Jewish people experienced while being freed from slavery.
Another fun song for the family is a song about Pharaoh and the plague of the frogs. A few lines from the song go like this:
“One day when Pharaoh awoke in his bed
There were frogs on his head,
There were frogs in his bed.
Frogs on his toes,
And frogs in his nose.
Frogs here, frogs there,
Frogs were jumping everywhere!”
It a very simple tune and its fun to have the adults and children act out the meaning.
