When I was thinking about working from home, I really struggled with finding a business that worked for me. In fact, I had a few false starts along the way. Much like when I was in college, everything sounded good to me.
One day I could envision myself working as a virtual assistant, the next day as a dog groomer, a few days later I’d consider selling my jewelry online, a week later, I’d think about taking classes to learn how to become a web designer. I knew I wanted to do something different than my former profession, but I was all over the map trying to come up with a business.
If you do some research on home businesses, you’ll find that there are literally thousands of home businesses. Which one is right for you?
Part of the decision making process is deciding what category of business you are interested in – from there, you can focus you efforts on finding the perfect home business.
Let’s take a look at some of the overall categories:
Service Business – Instead of selling a product, this business sells a service. You can provide the service to individuals or to other businesses.
Craft Business – This business sells crafts (usually hand-made, but can be imported). Examples include knitting, needlework, custom made clothing, jewelry, candles, wood work, glass work, etc.
eBay Store – If you find yourself turning to eBay for great deals on items, you aren’t alone. Millions of people use eBay every day. There are a number of eBay options, including selling items you purchased, items you made, or starting a drop-shipping business and marketing it through eBay.
Child Oriented Business – Do you love working with children? Then this could be the category for you. It includes child care, tutoring, or selling products geared for children.
Foods and Edibles – Love to bake or cook? There are a number of options for starting business in your home related to food.
Professional Business – This business offers professional services to clients, such as accounting or bookkeeping, legal or medical services, engineering, etc.
Franchise – Buying a franchise is a great way to hit the ground running – with a business that’s already been started by someone else and has all the wrinkles worked out. There are a number of franchise – some quite reasonable, and others that cost many thousands of dollars.
