In “Pigs Aplenty, Pigs Galore!” David McPhail capitalizes on his main strengths – clever illustrations and charming rhymes. The tight rhythmic cadence will make reading this story aloud all the more fun.
Our main character was sitting in his easy chair, reading a book late into the night, when he heard some strange crunching sounds. When he goes into the kitchen to investigate, he slips on a banana peel, left there by a snacking bovine, and lands on a pile of pigs eating dates and figs. They were all over his kitchen, eating him out of house and home!
They were all different colors, shapes and sizes, making a total mess of everything. Some were mixing up oatmeal in the sink, and others were walking around on stilts, wearing the most outrageous costumes. Some were even in their underpants!
Then more pigs started to come, arriving in planes and trains. Some bring their rock ‘n roll instruments and set them up in the living room. They kick off a party and call for huge amounts of pizza, leaving the bill to the poor unfortunate owner of the house.
Finally, he’s had enough and starts yelling and screaming for the pigs to get out of his house. One can hardly blame him – he’s even got a piece of pizza stuck to his head. But the poor piggies burst into tears and beg to stay. He relents, but only if they’ll clean up their mess.
The pigs get right to work, and then they are so tired, they have to go to bed. He gets everyone all tucked in, each with their own little piggy pillow, and then they all go to sleep. Not surprisingly, he has the strangest dreams all night long!
