Pizza Hut Encourages Reading and Welcomes Homeschoolers Too

Pizza Hut Book It! Program has been ongoing for many years to encourage students to read and has always awarded homeschoolers with pizza and other prizes. Previously when homeschoolers wanted to participate they had to do so through a homeschool group or co-op. It could be difficult to coordinate large groups of people, but everyone was happy enough with the program.

This year, and for the past few years, homeschoolers are allowed to sign up individually. The website announcement says the following:

“Thank you for your interest in the BOOK IT! Program for grades K-6. We are currently accepting enrollment requests for the 2008-09 program that will kick off October 1, 2008.
Effective February 14, 2008, BOOK IT! enrollment for homeschools with students in grades K-6 will be accepted on an individual basis only.
Who is eligible for the BOOK IT! Program for homeschools?
Any student in grades K-6 (5 years old by September of current school year) that is homeschooled and does not attend any other educational facility.”

This means that if you are homeschooled and don’t attend an educational facility of any kind such as taking part time classes at a public school, and probably using a twice a week classroom approach like my kids attend that you can sign up for family for the program. Kids that don’t meet the criteria can probably still sign up through their group or educational program.

This year the prizes are:

  • Monthly Pizza’s for children or groups who meet the reading goal
  • 6th month goal All-Star Reader award.
  • Separate summer reading program where kids have a chance to win a grand prize or runner up prize. (This contest had just ended, but look for it again next year.)

So if your homeschooler is in 6th grade and under, and if they homeschool without the help of an educational facility, and if you like incentives such as this, go to the Book It! Website and check out the program. My family does not qualify due to age and programs we use, so I would love to hear how it works out from someone who actually uses the program.
