Playful Artwork: Tic-Tac-Toe

Here are some more ways to make children’s decor more fun:

Tic-Tac-Toe Curtain

This is a really simple way to add some fun to children’s spaces. You can use a pre-made curtain panel or shade, or you can make one from fabric that coordinates with other fabric treatments in the space. Then, simply use hot glue or fabric glue to add ribbon in the shape of a tic tac toe board. If you prefer, use strips of a contrasting fabric or vinyl, or use brick-a-brack or lace for a more feminine touch, instead of plain ribbon. Next, attach pieces of Velcro in the center of each square to hold the game pieces in place (*game pieces addressed below).

Tic-Tac-Toe Blanket

Using the same directions as above, make any pre-made blanket into a tic-tac-toe board, or make your own simple blanket from fleece or the fabric or your choice. Make one large tic-tac-toe game board or a bunch of small ones so that more people can play at once. This is a great item for a slumber party.

Tic-Tac-Toe Rug

You can quickly make an inexpensive area rug into a game board. They are available in many department stores or you can purchase a bound remnant from a carpet store. Measure the area you want to cover and choose a color that coordinates with the space. Turn the rug face down and draw a tic-tac-toe board onto the back using a marker and a straight edge. The size of the board is up to you, but don’t make it too large or the rug will be difficult to move around. Cut the tic-tac-toe board pattern out of the rug. You can either fill in the cutouts with a different colored carpet or use a contrasting area rug and allow your flooring to show through the design.

Game Pieces

You can make game pieces from anything you like, such as cardboard, poster board, or felt, but stuffed game pieces are very cute. All you have to do is make appropriately sized “tubes” from strips of fabric and stuff them. To make O’s, sew both ends of the tube together. For X’s attach two tubes together at the center. Glue Velcro to the back of each game piece. For a tic-tac-toe rug, you can purchase X’s and O’s made of craft wood and paint them to match the decor.
