Politics 101: McCain’s Platform Continued

Yesterday, we started looking at McCain’s platform in overview. We will continue today looking at John McCain and the issues that he is talking about as he campaigns.

*Immigration–McCain supports strengthening our borders so that immigrants cannot enter the country illegally. He also supports assimilating those who are already here by programs that encourage learning English, American History and government, civics and democracy. McCain also wants to build strong alliances with Mexico and countries in Latin America who are opposed to the ideals espoused by Hugo Chavez.

*Lobbying and Ethics Reform–As a senator, McCain has often lobbied for guidelines and laws that limit special interest spending. As a platform of his candidacy, he continues to maintain that earmarking dollars for special interest spending should be stopped.

*Iraq–This could be a whole other blog but I will try to sum up as quickly as possible. John McCain does not support withdrawing from Iraq but rather would send more troops to Iraq to obtain stability protect the peace and spur economic growth among the Iraqis. He has been a vocal spokesman during the war and has laid out the failings of the current administration on their strategy.

*Human Life and Dignity–McCain is quoted as saying that abortion is a ‘human tragedy’. He strongly supports causes that promote human life and is opposed to those which would destroy it. While he’s promised to back federal funding for promising research from blood cord stem cells and adult stem cells, he has consistently voted against furthering cloning, abortion, and embryonic stem cell research (specifically fetal farming). McCain is also a strong proponent of adoption and would likely continue federal funding to support that cause.

*Protecting Marriage–McCain believes that protecting the family remains at the heart of a society and he strongly believes that marriage should be between one man and one woman. He does not however, support intervention of the government on a federal level. He believes that laws governing marriage should be left up to each state.

Just a few more issues to go on the McCain platform and then we will move onto other candidates. Check back later for the last installment of the McCain platform.
