Politics 101: More on Barack Obama

presidential electionWe had diverged there a little bit to talk about the important Pennsylvania primary. However, now that it’s over, there’s a winner and there was no clear sense of who will win the Democratic nomination, we can move on to continue our discussion of Barack Obama and his running platforms.

Creating More Jobs–Obama believes in increasing federal spending on research, education and training so that we can create high paying and secure jobs.

Investing in U.S. Manufacturing–Obama believes in investing in U.S. manufacturing to help American companies gain the skills they need and be able to further the research on green technologies. He also strongly supports investing in U.S. car makers to help encourage them to make “greener” cars.

Boosting the Renewable Energy Sector–I think it’s safe to say that Obama is deeply committed to improving our ability to produce green technologies. Obama has created the Renewable Portfolio Standard which will require 25% of American energy to come from renewable sources. This in and of itself is said to create hundreds if not thousands of new jobs for Americans.

Universal Service Fund–Obama wants to reform the fund along increasing federal spending in order to make sure every community has broadband access.

Protecting the Openness of the Internet–Obama believes that ISPs should not be allowed to charge fees in order to privilege the content of their website materials. Under his plan, non-profits and other small businesses would have the same opportunity as large companies to influence and reach large audiences.

Investment in Rural Areas–Obama wants to improve rural schools, provide incentives to attract doctors to rural areas, expand high speed internet access to those rural areas, and invest in small businesses in rural areas. He considers this one key component of helping to strengthen the economy.
