Potty Training Our Son Part X

My mid morning and late evening premonitions were haunted by visions of our son peeing in his pants in the middle of the industrial linoleum floors of our local grocery store. I did not even want to imagine how I would deal with such an event. So to save myself from what was ensured to be a mortifying experience, I continued to put our son in diapers when we went out of the house. Needless to say our son had his very own thoughts on the matter of wearing diapers in public. By the second week of potty training he refused to allow me to put a diaper on him when we were headed out the door. I was more than hesitant but I knew that this day would come and that I could not put our son in diapers every time we left the house indefinitely. I had a brief chat with him explaining to him that he needed to tell me right away when he felt like he needed to go to the bathroom. Before we left the house for our various weekly errands, I put him on the potty. Our first underwear wearing outing was a series of stops that involved picking up garden items which culminated in a stop at grandma’s house (to plant some black raspberry bushes). I continually asked him during our stops if he had to go to the bathroom and he continually said he did not. Finally, when got to his grandma’s house I was sure that he had wet his pants in his carseat. Thankfully I was wrong. I asked him once again if he had to go potty and once again he told me he did not. He was off to play while I got the planting done. In the midst of playing with the wagon he yelled, “Mommy I have to pee!”
