I know. I know. Some of you haven’t even looked through the photos you shot at Christmas, and Easter is less than two weeks away. Time waits for no man and that goes double for overworked parents who desperately need to find room on their camera’s memory card to accommodate Easter shots.
So what if your tulips are buried under six inches of snow. Spring like temperatures may not arrive in time for your holiday get together, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get your camera out and document your annual family gathering.
Here are some tips to help get ready for your upcoming Easter photo shoot:
PREPARE. Prior to attending family celebrations (especially ones that occur at major holidays) I prepare by thinking about the photographs I want to take. For example, I will jot down the types of poses I want to snap and the individual groupings I want to capture (e.g. all the grandkids together, siblings from the same family, pets and their owners, etc.).
SNAP AWAY. Prepare to take multiple photographs… of the same scene. Regardless of what you say or do, people will blink. Believe me. And you can’t always count on catching minor infractions on your camera’s tiny LCD screen. You might think you captured the perfect shot on the first try, but inevitably you’ll find (once you get home and view your pics on your computer) that something or someone is off.
BE FUNNY. You’ll get more of your subjects to smile for you if they have reason to. Bossing people around and demanding that they say, “Cheese” rarely will get you the shot you are after. Have some jokes or funny phrases handy to use just before you take the photo. I call my 3-year-old silly names like “Cheeky Charlie” or “Wacky Tacky” to get her to smile naturally for the camera.
