Preparing for the Warehouse Grocery Store

We have been planning a trip to our local warehouse grocery store for next weekend. There is a lot of preparation this time around, in order to maximize our savings and stockpile and minimize our food waste (food waste is a big part of lost money for many food budgets!

The mega trip is planned to hit the time right before school and before the cold weather of winter sets in. With both school and winter, the time and opportunity to go out shopping decreases. With winter, especially, there are days when we might get snowed in, when we might lose power, when we might get sick and have to stay home, so having food supplies on hand is a good thing. Boxed milk and juice are especially helpful when the power goes out, for example. Just being able to pull ingredients together into a quick meal is such a lifesaver.

With the warehouse store, it is important to compare prices on items. While many things are bargains, many are not. Sometimes the convenience of buying in bulk makes up for a few cents difference compared to going to separate stores. This all has to be figured out. A good way to do this is to have a price book that you have made, so you can compare prices.

I start preparing for the warehouse store by making a list of what we need. This list consists of both items that have run out and items that are running low. Some things are obvious, while others require a trip down to our basement shelves to check the stock.

In the weeks leading up to a big warehouse trip, I also evaluate what stock we currently have left. Doing this has a lot of money saving benefit in and of itself. I’ll share all of that and more with the next post.
