Preventing Injuries as You Prepare Your House for the Holidays

Whoever thought that decorating your home could be dangerous? Well according to the “U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission,” injuries from holiday decorating and decorations are on the rise.

I read that many people are cut from shattered glass ornaments and falling from ladders while trying to put up lights or other holiday decorations. Burn injuries and deaths are also issues when it comes to fires caused by candles or Christmas trees.

No one likes to think it could happen to them but we really do need to keep safety in the back of our minds as we prepare our homes for the holidays. I like a beautifully decorated house as much as the next guy but it’s not worth getting injured.

We used to get a fresh tree every year. I love the smell of pine but I hated the pine needles so the mess became not worth it. Now we enjoy our artificial tree. But if you do decide to bring in a fresh cut tree, be sure it isn’t dry or the needles don’t easily fall off. Otherwise it is a fire risk.

When setting up your tree, you also need to be careful that it’s not too close to heat sources like candles, fireplaces or vents. These can cause the tree to dry out quickly, again, posing a fire risk. You should also make sure that you are checking its water supply every day.

The holidays are one of my favorite times for lighting candles. I especially love scents that fit in with the season. But these pose serious risks as well. Never leave a candle unattended, too close to something that can catch fire or leave it burning when you leave the house or go to sleep. The same is true for Christmas lights. Turn them off before leaving or falling asleep.

No matter what type of decorating you are doing and how you are preparing your home for the holidays, don’t forget about safety.
