Preventing Social Decay

Have you noticed the social decay that is happening as families are torn apart and moral values disintegrate? I have definitely noticed that as families have lost their moral identity and homes have been broken that children are the ones that suffer. It is obvious as you look at the character of many of today’s children and teenagers that the values that our nation once cherished are disappearing from the rising generation.

The downfall of the mighty empire Rome was the social decay of its people, which started in the home, as parents no longer taught their children moral values. As a parent I am striving to teach my children moral values and ensure that our home is a safe place.

I especially like a quote from a leader in my church James E. Faust, he says, “In my opinion, the teachings, rearing, and training of children requires more intelligence, intuitive understanding, humility, strength, wisdom, spirituality, perseverance, and hard work than any other challenge we might have in life. This is especially so when moral foundations of honor and decency are eroding around us. For us to have successful homes, values must be taught, and there must be rules, there must be standards, there must be absolutes.”

Barbara Bush, wife of former United States president George Bush, once said to graduates of Wellesley College, “Whatever the era, whatever the times, one thing will never change: Fathers and mothers, if you have children, they must come first. You must read to your children and you must hug your children and you must love your children. Your success as a family, our success as a society, depends not on what happens in the White House but on what happens inside your house.”

By teaching our children and providing a home full of peace and love we can strengthen our children and ensure that they will stand morally strong in a society that is slowly crumbling. For what truly will determine the success of our society is what happens inside the home.
