Primary Time: General Conference

The Primary theme for March is “Follow the Prophet.” One great way that you can carry that into your home this week is to prepare your children for General Conference. As an adult I look forward to General Conference and the messages that I am going to hear from the leaders of the church, but as a child I really didn’t care about it one way or another. It would be great if we could get our children excited about it before conference comes.

One way to do that is to play some type of game at every family dinner. It could be a game in which the children need to be able to name the twelve apostles and choose which picture belongs to whom. Or it could be a trivia game in which the children guess different facts about each apostle. These facts could be as simple as how many children each one had, where they were born, and what their profession was before they were called to be an apostle.

Another important way to prepare your children for General Conference is to tell your children how excited you are about General Conference. Tell them what makes General Conference so special and about a special experience that you have had with General Conference in the past.

You can also show your children pictures of Temple Square, and the Conference Center. Explain to them that people from all over the world gather there to listen to conference. If you live close enough you might take them down to Temple Square this week, and show them around. Or you can remind them of a past trip there. Also if you feel that your children are ready, and you have the opportunity, it is a wonderful experience to go and hear conference in person.

As we prepare our children to listen to President Hinckley and the other leaders of the church now, General Conference can become a special experience for even our youngest children. What have you done to make General Conference a special experience for your family?
