Product Recall: Trek Bicycles

bike

This week, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada issued a voluntary recall notice in cooperation with Trek Bicycle Corporation of Wisconsin. The recall is due to a problem with specific models of Trek bicycles sold over the spring and summer season.

These Trek bicycles have a faulty bolt between the seat and the post. This means that the seat can fall, leading to injuries. Four injuries have been reported so far.

27,000 of these bicycles were sold at specialty bike shops between May and September 2011. They sold for $550 to $1100.

To determine whether you have a bicycle that is affected by the recall, look on the bicycle’s frame to find the model number. District, 9th District, WSD, Livestrong and Disc bikes were affected. Trek models 7.2 FX, 7.3 FX, 7.4 FX, and 7.5 FX are also affected. All recalled models are 2012 models. Other Trek bicycles are not affected.

To determine whether the model is a 2012 model, look for the SKU number. The SKU number is on a bracket near the bicycle pedals. If the last two digits end in 12, the bicycle is a 2012 model. If you are unsure whether you have a bicycle that has been recalled, call the Trek Recall Hotline. The Trek Recall Hotline is (800) 373-4594.

The bicycles do not need to be returned. Call the recall hotline to get a replacement bolt for your bicycle.

When you are buying or selling second hand items, make sure that you do not buy or sell a recalled item. It is illegal to sell a recalled item. Always return it to the stores mentioned in the recall or order replacement parts so that the item is safe to use.
