Protect your Ears

Our trip to the doctor’s office today was spurred by continued sick days with our son. He has been waking up with 103 degree temperatures, been nursing every 30 minutes each night, and fluctuating between our normal, happy baby and an uncomfortable, unhappy, baby boy. Not only has this sickness adversely affected our son but it has also required me to miss two days of classes. Mom hasn’t been sleeping because of his desire to nurse every 30 minutes. Perhaps most difficult for Mom and Dad is seeing their little man being in pain and unhappy. We’d had enough! So we went to the doctor to, at least, relieve our fears.

The morning we went my wife took off the day from work to be with the child that needed her and also to come to the doctor. We had been calling the nurse each day to update on symptoms and monitor his progress (good or bad) to determine whether or not he should come in to be checked up. That morning, after another sleepless night and another high fever morning, we all decided it was best to bring the little man in to make sure there weren’t any big or small problems that could be addressed.

Luckily or son was fine. Everything checked out. The doctor listened to his heart and his breathing. He checked his eyes and his ears (and my son really didn’t like having a foreign object in his ears). After all of the medically sound tests to determine if there was anything seriously wrong with our son our doctor sai d, “it’s in the eyes.” By this he meant that you can somewhat identify a child in serious pain by their eyes and our sons eyes were bright and cheerful. At that moment we looked over and he was laughing and covering his ear with the paper covering the examination table. He was protecting his ears from further intrusion. Perhaps he’s getting better after all. That was funny, son.
