Punk Farm – Jarrett J. Krosoczka

Didn’t we all have a rock band we just adored when we were teenagers? We had their posters on our walls, listened to their music at levels so loud that our parents would complain, and we begged and begged to go to their concerts? Well, in reality I never did, but I’ve heard tales, and I know that kind of adoration could get a little out of control. I bet, though, that you never heard a band as cool as Punk Farm.

Children’s author Jarrett J. Krosoczka tells us the story of this hip, cool, wild band. I do mean wild literally. Well, maybe not literally – I’m pretty sure they’re domesticated. Let me tell you more about them and you’ll know what I mean.

pfFarmer Joe runs this particular farm, and he’s a hard working chap. Each night, he drags himself off to bed, but the animals on the farm are far from sleepy. Their day has just begun. They have a show to get ready for.

Pig plugs in the amp. Cow sets up her drums. Chicken sets up her keyboards. Goat tunes his bass while Sheep tests the microphones.

They’re halfway through rehearsal when they notice lights on in the farmhouse. They didn’t think the farmer could hear them, but can he? They freeze. But in just a few minutes, the lights go back out, and the animals go back to their practice. Outside, a long line of animals buy tickets, looking forward to the show.

The house lights dim, the spotlights come on, and the band is ready to rock. And what is their #1 hit? “Old MacDonald Had a Farm,” sung rock-style, of course! The crowd goes wild. But then, they already were wild. (We discussed this already, didn’t we?)

“Thank you, Wisconsin,” they say as the music dies down.

Early the next morning, Farmer Joe comes out to start work, wondering why the animals are so sleepy. Perhaps he’ll never know.
