Quiet Companions (of the Feline Persuasion)

We have some guests at the cats-only boarding facility who are known talkers. Personally, I like the talkers. They’re good company! Sometimes, I talk back… but then I’m always talking to the dogs at home, too. Like I said, good company.

But there are times when the talking can get to be overwhelming. I recently saw a list of the most talkative and the least talkative cat breeds — and if talkability is important to you in a pet, the info might be useful. At the very least, I hope it’s interesting!

You can maybe guess the most talkative breed of cat: the Siamese. These cats are known for their chattiness. Others who made the list of loudest cats include the Burmese, the Korat, the Himalayan, and the Japanese Bobtail. Another thing these breeds seem to have in common? They are very attached to (and social with) their owners. So maybe how much they talk is tied into that personality trait?

On the quiet end of the spectrum, we have the Persian, the Scottish Fold, the Pixie Bob, the American Curl, and the Somali. But according to PetWave.com (who posted the list of the most and least talkative breeds), these cats also bond strongly with their caretakers. So maybe talkability really is a trait of the breed.

One thing to keep in mind: although a particular breed can tend to act a certain way, you’ll always find those who are exceptions to the rule. You might encounter a silent Siamese or a chatty Persian. Every animal has a distinct personality — just like people do! So let these breed characteristics serve as a guideline, but not a law, when you’re choosing a companion.

Do you have a talker in your household? Do you think they fit the “type” of their breed, or do they break the mold?
