Read Books for Charity!

What if you could read to your heart’s content and donate to charity at the same time? Well, your dreams have come true.

Harlequin is holding a great promotion for the year 2008. They want readers to sign up and pledge to read as many books as they can during the year, and at the end of the year, they will count up how many books were read total and donate that number of books back to the National Center for Family Literacy. They want America to read 100,000 books by the end of the year. Not a problem, says I!

There’s only one rule, and that is that Harlequin would like fifty percent of your reading to come from their company. The other fifty percent can be anything under the sun.

But, Harlequin is romance, right? What if you don’t read a lot of romance, and, what if you really don’t like lusty bodice-rippers? Not to worry. Over the years, Harlequin has broadened the variety of books they carry. You’ll still find the traditional romances they used to carry, but now they have medical romances, NASCAR romances, their Red Dress line is chick lit, and Luna features fantasy. They have romantic suspense, Spice – which is their line of erotica which I’m not touching with a ten-foot pole, but just to make you aware of what’s out there — and their Steeple Hill line, which is faith-inspired romance. That’s right – they go all the way from erotica to faith-filled. Now, that’s a wide variety if I ever saw one!

Head on over to Harlequin and see if there’s something there that catches your eye. Then sign up for the challenge and help give the National Center for Family Literacy a much-needed donation. Check out the website and join up if you’re interested in participating in the challenge.
