Realizing My Body Is a Temple

In my effort to be healthy and look healthy to achieve the new me before the end of the year, I realized I had a lot of house cleaning to do—and I’m not talking about my stick built house, I’m talking about my body. I’ve had to become really honest with myself and begin to view myself differently than I have been. I need to view my body as a temple of the Holy Spirit. My body is mine on loan and I really need to be taking better care of it.

  • “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are Gods.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

If I were borrowing something valuable from a friend, I wouldn’t dream of treating it badly; I’d be taking great care of it so she would know I am trustworthy and respect her things. When I’m in a guest’s home, I don’t abuse it and start altering their décor. Why should I think my body is any less valuable to God?

Unhealthy lifestyle choices can cause our time in the flesh to be shortened. How we treat our bodies can affect our thoughts, mood and physical abilities; they can make us less effective for Christ.

Today in church our pastor talked about the parable of the talents as stated in Matthew chapter 25. The sermon got me thinking about what I’ve written here and how God has entrusted us with our bodies which can be looked at as the talents in the parable. How can we use the body God has given us and use widely to bring God the best return on His investment? In my next blog I am going to broaden the analogy of the Parable of the Talents and share how we can apply it to various aspects of our life.

How do you treat your body? Do you treat your body as a temple for the Lord using it to serve Him and carry out His will? Are you making healthy choices that keep you in proper position to serve? I’m working on this myself and look forward to sharing bits of my journey in future blogs.
