Redecorating a Room- Part 2

Last week we looked at some tips for redecorating a room. I suggested using your favorite color or colors to decorate a room. Another idea is to think of your favorite outdoor location. If it is the beach, you might be a person who is most comfortable with blues and sandy colors. If it is a forest you might be happier with deep greens.

Don’t just consider plain paint for the walls. Instead you might chose to go with a textured paint such as a suede look or you might decide to do what we did in one house and have two different colors on the walls. We used a pale pink on the top and a deep blue on the bottom. Between them was a dado made of decorative feature strip of wallpaper that picked up the colors in the room. You can also get decorative wood strips which can be added to the wall to make a dado.

Another time we used the decorative wallpaper strip around the top of the room just under the cornice of the ceiling. Sometimes you might paint three walls one color but elect to have a strong color for a feature wall.

When we had an old house with decorative cornices, instead of painting the cling all one color we picked out the decorative feature in varying darker shades of the same color. Yes, it took my husband a while to paint it. I don’t ever do ceilings as I don’t like getting on ladders. He did his share of grumbling at the time but afterwards admitted it was well worth the effort. Everyone who came to our house commented how effective it looked. For that ceiling we used three differing shades of apricot.

I have seen decorative ceilings done where it has the old fashioned look with lots of colors and gilt, but to me that’s taking it too far and can look a tizzy. But then I’m not a fan of gilt at any time. Basically though when decorating you and your spouse are the ones who live in it you.
