Reducing Travel Costs

Summer is primetime for family vacations. Kids are out of school and travel deals abound. Of course, in today’s financially strapped society, some of these “deals” are not all they’re cracked up to be. If you are looking for simpler ways to cut down on travel expenses, then consider the following ideas:

Togethering: This not-so new concept has been thrown around quite a bit since the economy has languished in the dumpster. “Togethering” is basically a new word for family reunion. However, instead of the entire clan hanging out at grandma’s house for a weekend, you select the family members you get along with the best and take off on a group vacation. Depending on how many cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents you can gather, you can take advantage of group rates on everything from airfare to hotel rooms to transportation and meals, plus you’ll get to spend some quality time with people you actually like.

Job Swap: Many companies have a network of offices in major cities around the world. If you happen to be employed by a company that has facilities in places you’ve always wanted to visit, then consider swapping jobs. The concept is not as far fetched as it once was given the global expansion of corporate America. Some swaps can last up to a year, while others are good for a couple of weeks. Either way, the opportunity to experience a new culture, meet new people, and explore legendary landmarks is something the entire family can embrace.

House Swap: If you can’t swap your job, then consider swapping out your house in order to travel to incredible vacation destinations without breaking the bank. There are a slew of reputable home swapping services that will allow you to save on lodging and enjoy the comfort of someone else’s home while you are away from yours. House swapping is family-friendly and involves minimal costs.
