Remembering Veterans

left

Memorial Day is just around the corner, and if you are looking for a special way to honor a military hero, a scrapbook is a super place to start.

Right now you can find a slew of scrapbooking materials that feature a military theme, from stickers to stamps, die cuts to frames. While there is no lack of supplies to decorate your military-themed memory album, keep in mind that the materials are there to simply embellish your page designs, the bulk of the layout should come from personal photos and mementos. For example, if you are planning to craft a scrapbook for a Marine in time for Memorial Day, consider including pictures of him or her at boot camp, milestone ceremonies, time spent overseas with fellow troops and being reunited with loved ones.

As for memorabilia, you could feature letters, postcards or emails exchanged with your military hero while he or she was deployed. Another option is to print out songs, such as “God Bless America” or “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” and place them on the layout with various photos taken while your special veteran served his or her country. Awards, medals and other honors also make for great additions to page designs, as do newspapers clippings from the city where your loved one was/is stationed.

The amount of layouts you will need to make will vary depending on the particular member of the Armed Forces you choose to spotlight. For example, if you are crafting a memory album for a career Marine, expect your book to be quite lengthy. In fact, you may have to craft a series of books depending on how many photos, mementos and awards the veteran has accumulated. To make things easier on you and the people viewing the scrapbook, consider creating a timeline highlighting special dates and events. By documenting moments in chronological order, you can avoid getting overwhelmed by the monumental task at hand.
