Remind Yourself You Have Everything You Need

It can be easy to get consumed with what is lacking in a single parent’s life—after all, we are often trying to scrape together money and resources and spread ourselves thin to meet the obligations and requirements of life. We may also feel like we are constantly explaining that we cannot afford something, or feel as though we are putting things on hold due to lack of resources. I think this is why it can be so important to remind ourselves that we really do have everything we need. We are doing fine and all of our requirements are being met…

I think that it can be especially tough when you suffer a severe change in standard of living when you become a single parent. Whether through a separation, divorce, death or just going from being a solo person to a parent, it can be shocking how one’s finances and lifestyle are affected. You may miss things that you had before—vacations, cars, larger house, or even a little more cushion in your bank account. The fact is, however, that you are making it. The Universe is taking care of you and you have all of the things you need today. Just reminding yourself of this fact can help to regroup and feel some appreciation in the midst of the struggle.

As parents, it can be double hard when our children feel as though they are not getting everything they want. It can take time for them to learn that there is a difference between “wants” and “needs” as well but we can help model for them by changing our attitude about such things. Accepting that we are doing fine can be the first step. We can remind them that we really do have enough food to eat and a roof over our head, even if we are not living at the same standards as before.
