Resolutions for the New Year

Alright, it’s the start of a new year and that can only mean one thing – that’s right, time to make some resolutions.

Having a home business isn’t much different from any other part of your personal life – there is always something you will want to improve upon. As I enter the fifth year of my freelance writing business, there are still many things I have yet to accomplish and bad habits I have been unable to break. And so, as we enter 2006, I would like to share my resolutions for the upcoming year.

Stop Procrastinating – Like so many others, I seem to do my best work when I’m under pressure. And while that might be fine under ordinary circumstances, the unpredictability brought on by having two small children often has a way of making tight deadlines even tighter. As a result, I am going to try to begin certain tasks two weeks before they are due rather than waiting until five – or fewer – days before deadline.

Less Internet Browsing – Why is it that the tool that has had the greatest impact on my ability to work at home be the one that often causes me to be far less productive than I can be? I’ll be the first to admit that I spend far too much time hopping around the Internet. While some of this time is spent looking for freelance work, most of it is what I call “aimless wandering”. In the New Year, I am going to make a conscious effort to confine my Internet time to specific periods of the day such as when I’m enjoying my first cup of coffee.

Take More Chances – Not long after I decided to begin my home business, the instructor of an adult education course in freelance writing suggested that I focus my efforts in public relations. I’ve been reluctant to do this because quite frankly, I’m not quite sure where to begin. I began making some steps in this direction during 2005 and I intend to continue in this direction during 2006.

While the year is still young, why don’t you take some time to think about the things you would like to do to get your home business moving in the right direction during 2006? Write them down; better yet, share them on the Home Business Forum. Maybe we can help each other meet our goals.
