RootsTech 2012 Sessions for Beginners – Day Two

laptops RootsTech 2012 is coming up fast! If you are someone who is new to genealogy, or someone who considers herself to be a beginning genealogist, you might be of the impression that RootsTech is not for you. Not so! There are plenty of sessions that are designed for beginning genealogists, just like you!

I’ve already gone over some of the sessions for beginning genealogists that will take place on the first day of RootsTech 2012. Day two will take place on Friday, February 3, 2012. Here are a few of the sessions that are designed specifically for beginning genealogists that will take place that day.

“Awesome Family Websites: Record Your Awesome Living Family History” is one of many sessions for beginning genealogists. This class will discuss specific options of family websites that will allow your family to communicate privately with each other. Those communications can be recorded to create a family history. Examples are given of extended families who have done this. They have seen their family relationships change as a result.

This class will be presented by Tevya Washburn, who is the Tech manager of Fiddler Studios web service, and the Editor of Mormon Life Hacker. It will also be presented by Kurt Francom who has years of training in public speaking and who helps businesses to use the power of the web.

“Google Search 2012” is a session for all users, and all levels of genealogists. This session will be presented by Dan Lynch, author of “Google Your Family Tree”. In this hands-on class, you will learn genealogy-specific tips and tricks that will help you to get the most out of your Google searches.

“New Avenues for Genetic Genealogy” is a session that discusses how DNA can be used to trace anthropological origins, to reunite families, and to reveal relationships between people. It will be presented by Jane Buck, who is the Customer Relations Supervisor for Family Tree DNA. It will also be presented by Elise Friedman, who is a professional genealogist specializing in Jewish genealogy, genetic genealogy, and technology.

“Genealogy Internet Gems” is a session that will teach beginning genealogists how to find “the cream of the crop” out of millions of genealogy pages that are on the internet. It will be presented by The Ancestry Insider, who was honored as part of Family Tree Magazine’s “40 Best Genealogy Blogs”.

“Using Your Blog as Your Online Research Log” is a session that will teach beginning genealogists how to use their personal blog as an online genealogy research log. It can be set up quickly through Blogger, and easily accessed no matter where you are at. It will be presented by Drew Smith, MLS, Director of the Federation of Genealogical Societies and President of the Florida Genealogical Society of Tampa.

“Database Design” teaches beginning genealogists how to evaluate the data that they are working on, and to explore ways that researchers might want to use it. It will presented by Amy Johnson Crow, MLIS, CG, who is the Genealogical Content Manager and Contract Specialist for Archives.com.
