Do it yourself is a wonderful way to get your household projects done exactly the way you want them and with a minimum cost. But the emergency rooms across the country are filled with people who got injured from do it yourself projects. Here is what you need to know to be prepared before you start your next home project. A little preparation could just keep you healthy and safe, so you can admire your hard earned results instead of spending time recovering from them.
Have an Emergency Plan
While we want to prevent accidents, you still need to know what to do if one occurs. Have a plan for who you will call in an emergency. Include the number for poison control in case you or someone else accidentally ingests or gets a chemical in the eye.
Have Someone Else Home and Available
I’ll never forget the time when my husband had to stand outside for a full 15 minutes, stuck, when car hood slammed down on his hand. Make sure that someone else is home when you are doing your projects and let them know what you are working on. You can also ask a neighbor to check in on you or a friend to call.
Watch Your Eyes
Eye injuries are one of the most common reasons that people wind up in the emergency room, and the consequences can be severe, including the loss of part or all of their vision. Protective eyewear can eliminate most of this risk. Make sure your eyewear is impact resistant and fits snuggly on your face.
Get Enough Rest
I’ve been there. You are tired but you just want to get the job finished, so you get up early and work past midnight. The problem is that if you are sleepy, you are more likely to be in or cause an accident. Your reaction time will be slow, almost as if you were drunk. Save the heavy work for the next day and get some rest. The project will be even more delayed if you get hurt.
