Continuing my series “Saving Money on Your Summer Vacation” today we are looking at more ways to save in California. As I mentioned in my previous blogs the fact that financial analysts are warning that we are on the brink of a recession has some contemplating giving up their annual family vacations in order to spare their household’s bottom line.
However, I’m here to show you that a little planning can go a long way to help save your family’s road trip. If you simply spend some time researching travel attractions that don’t require you to spend a ton of money you can still take your dream vacation.
The following is a list of other budget saving sites in San Diego:
Cabrillo National Monument
The visitor center at this historic site recounts the 16th century voyage of Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. He is credited with making major discoveries in what is now the western coast of the United States. While at the monument visitors can ascend the circular staircase of the refurbished Old Point Loma Lighthouse or take in the exhibits displayed in the Assistant Keeper’s Quarters. Hiking tours are also offered along the Mediterranean Bayside Trail where guides teach guests about the native flora and fauna. You can also spend time at the tide pools or hang out at the overlook to watch whales. And the best part: Admission is just $5.
Torrey Pines Gliderport
This popular tourist spot is located just south of Torrey Pines State Reserve in La Jolla. The gliderport is set atop the sandstone cliffs and is a haven for adventure seekers. Dozens of paragliders and hang gliders take to the skies from the gliderport. Tandem flights cost hundreds of dollars, but watching the colorful gliders take off and hover over the Pacific Ocean doesn’t cost a single cent.
Museums
San Diego is home to dozens of world-class museums and if you plan your visit just right you can take in the exhibits for free. For example, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, which just underwent a major renovation, offers free admission on the third Tuesday each month. The Firehouse Museum is free the first Thursday each month, and admission to the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum, dedicated to Marine Corps aviation history, is always free. Meanwhile, the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum, which features awe-inspiring gardens, boasts a modest entry fee of just $2.
