Last night was ‘Meet the Teacher’ night at our elementary school. It seems early doesn’t it? But in reality, we are in a year-round school system and we start our new school year tomorrow. Oddly, on a Thursday. There are pro’s and con’s to being in school ‘year-round’ as they call it. Plenty of longer breaks, half days and other luxuries that more traditional schools don’t enjoy.
My children have been in both traditional and year-round, and I have never even thought of creating a scrapbook layout depicting the difference and how I feel about each one. That is certainly something I will have to do this year.
However, I did get a jump start on my school year photography last night. Snapping a photograph of my two youngest with their new teachers, at their new desks, with their new supplies, in various locations in their classroom and then my youngest got to do classroom scavenger hunt in which I was sure to capture a photo or two.
As I was watching her flitting around the classroom trying to find all the new discoveries, I got to thinking about something I have done every year since my children were young. On the first day of school, I have posed them next to my car every year. The cars have come and gone, the children have changed and grown, but I have every single one of those pictures.
There was only one thing I wish I could change about what I started. Something else I wish I had done – and perhaps by sharing it with you – those of you who have small children will be able to start. I wish I had taken a picture of my child outside the classroom door (with the door in the background). The reason for this, is because I think it would be a neat way to see how much their size has changed without differing the background too much. My cars have changed, and so the pictures don’t show the true height growth.
Even if you’ve never done anything like this before, it is never too late to start. Make this the year you begin some new school-year traditions.
