Sham-rockin’ St. Patrick’s Day Fun

left

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. While many will be spending the day celebrating the luck of the Irish at their corner pub, if you have your own band of little leprechauns at home, then you might benefit from the following kid-friendly holiday activities:

HOMEMADE POT OF GOLD

Materials:

Markers or Crayons

Paper plate

Scissors

Gold glitter

Glue

Directions:

Gently fold the paper plate in half, trying not to crease it tightly.

Draw a capital letter “D” on the plate, using the light crease line as starting point for the back of the “D.” You should have about an inch of space between the “D” and the edges of the plate.

Cut out the “D.” When you are done, rotate the plate so that the bottom of it resembles a curved pot.

Use the crayons or markers to color in the top half of the plate to look like a rainbow.

Color the bottom half of the plate black.

Add a bit of glitter to the top portion of the black pot to resemble gold coins.

Hang the pot of gold from a door handle or attach them to the wall as a decorative touch on St. Patrick’s Day.

MINI LEPRECHAUN HATS

Materials:

Styrofoam cup

Small paper dessert plate

Black and yellow construction paper

Green markers or crayons

Piece of elastic

Stapler

Glue

Directions:

Color the cup and plate green.

Turn the cup upside down and glue it to the center of the plate.

Cut out a 2-inch wide strip of black paper construction paper and glue it to around the Styrofoam cup. This is your hat band.

Cut out a 2-inch by 2-inch yellow square from the construction paper. Then, cut a 1-inch by 1-inch square out of its center.

Glue the square to the hat band. This is the buckle for the hat.

Staple the elastic to the hat.

Have your little leprechaun don the hat by placing it on his head and keeping it in place with the elastic around his chin.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY GREEN MAGIC PUNCH

Ingredients:

6 scoops of lime sherbet

1 cup of cold water

1 half cup of sugar

2 tablespoons of lime juice

Lemon-lime soda

Lime wedges

Powdered sugar

Directions:

Puree the sherbet, water, sugar and lime juice in a blender.

Put crushed ice into six glasses.

Pour four the mixture into each glass, and top each with lemon-lime soda and fresh lime wedges.
