Simple Easter Basket Idea

If you are looking for something fun to do and you would like something different from the typical Easter basket, you will like this project. It’s very simple to do and the supplies are inexpensive. Your kids will have a good time making it, and they will have custom Easter baskets this year.

Start by selecting a small to medium size plastic, rectangular storage basket found in most discount and dollar stores. They are available in different colors, or you can choose white so it goes with the decorations you and your kids will be adding.

Make sure you choose the style that has little rectangular cutouts along the sides. Weave ribbon (satin, grosgrain, or gift wrapping ribbon), flat lace, fabric strips, or strips of paper through every other cutout to create a basket weave pattern. You can alternate colors with each row or use one color throughout.

Start at the middle of one side or one end of the basket. When you have woven ribbon or other materials all the way around, and reached the starting point, tie the two ends in a bow. You can allow the bow to show, and you can make the bow in the next row line up with it, or you can start in different spots with each row so the bows are staggered. If you prefer not to have bows, tie the ends in a knot and tuck them inside.

For a handle, attach one end of ribbon to each side of the basket, through a hole and tie into a knot. You will need wired ribbon, light wire, pipe cleaners or other stiff materials for the handle to make it stand up. Fabric strips pressed with starch will also work.

When the weaving is complete, decorate the basket with beads, buttons, bows, tiny Easter trinkets, and of course, your child’s name. Children can paint their names, write them on with indelible marker, or use lettered stickers.
