Snapping the Fish

Now that my daughter is more fish than kid, I’m thinking of investing in a camera that will allow me to snap shots underwater. Since neither of my parents swim there is little chance that they will ever get to see their one and only granddaughter navigate below the surface of the water. By purchasing a waterproof camera I can document life under the sea, so they can see the fun my daughter has flipping and twirling in the deep.

Waterproof cameras come in a variety of shapes, sizes and price points. If you are planning to take just a few snapshots during a single trip to the beach, then spare your wallet, and pick up a disposable underwater camera. If you keep the camera steady and are shooting in decent lighting, you’ll end up with satisfactory shots. These inexpensive cameras are not designed to capture fine details or brilliant colors, for that you will have to invest in one of the following:

Waterproof Olympus Stylus 790 SW

Olympus is known for its superior line of underwater digital cameras and this model is no exception. It is waterproof and shockproof. In addition, the 790 SW also boasts airtight seals, which helps to keep sand out. These standout features make the camera ideal for taking pictures at the beach. The only problem: all this genius engineering comes with a hefty price tag.

Pentax Optio W30 Waterproof Camera

The Optio W30 records breathtaking underwater still images and movie clips, up to a maximum of two hours and to a depth of three meters, without requiring waterproof housing. You can take it to beaches, rivers, lakes and pools without worrying about dirt, dust, sand, water or moisture. In addition, its compact size means you can tote it just about anywhere, including to the bottom of the pool, with minimal restrictions.

Fantasea FL-10 Housing

If you don’t want to invest in a separate underwater camera, then consider purchasing a waterproof housing unit for your existing model. The Fantasea FL-10 is specifically designed for the Nikon Coolpix L10 and L11. The underwater unit provides access to all camera functions. In addition, the waterproof unit has a built-in diffuser, anti-glare hood over LCD screen and four stainless steel buckles.
