The Special Needs Podcast Roundup went up on March 12, 2012. This week, I’d like to point out an episode of a podcast called “The Power of Moms”. It features Mary Jenkins, the mother of two young children who have autism. She shares her resources, and provides encouragement for all mothers who are having similar parenting experiences.

Support Group for Parents of Kids with Special Needs
Here is a quick list of several different support groups that are designed to help parents of children who have special needs. Everyone can use a little help, support, and encouragement from time to time. The list might include a support group that is located near where you live. If not, it still can give you a good idea about the resources that might be in your neighborhood, and how to find them.

Survey Shows Emotional Impact of Food Allergies
A survey was given to parents of children who have food allergies. Their responses revealed how the parents felt, from an emotional perspective, about their child’s allergies. It also included information about how the parents thought their child felt about his or her food allergies. It turns out that having food allergies really has a big emotional impact on a family.

Movie Uses the Word “Autistic” as an Insult
In the new movie “21 Jump Street”, there is a controversial scene that was probably meant to be interpreted as a joke. A police captain is unimpressed with the efforts of two of his officers. To emphasize how poorly the officers presentation was done, he asks them “Are you autistic”? Parents of children who have an autism spectrum disorder are concerned that this could encourage young people to start using the word “autistic” as an insult.

Laws Restrict the Sale of Allergy Medications
Having trouble getting a hold of some of your child’s allergy medications this year? It could be due to several laws, in different states, that specifically restrict the sale of those types of medications. The laws are designed to prevent people from using allergy medications to make methamphetamine. Unfortunately, it is also going to make it harder for allergy sufferers to find relief from their symptoms.

Controversial Study Links Mobile Phones to ADHD
A study was done that exposed pregnant mice to an active mobile phone. When the baby mice became adults, they exhibited symptoms of ADHD. The researchers say that this could be happening in humans. Critics point out that you cannot reliably extrapolate data from an animal study and assume that the same results will happen with humans.
