The Special Needs Podcast Roundup went up on May 21, 2012. This week, I’d like to point out an episode of CNN’s Sanjay Gupta, MD that was released on May 14, 2012. The episode is called “Should We Diagnose Kids Pre-Psychotic?” Dr. Gupta discusses the changes to the DSM-5 and how labels could affect children. He also talks about how the removal of Asperger’s Syndrome could affect the health insurance coverage of treatment.
Public Swimming Pools Must be ADA Compliant
The Americans With Disabilities Act requires public pools to have permanent lifts or underwater ramps in place to assist adults and children who have disabilities with getting into and out of the pool. This requirement must be met by hotels, schools, and other public pools.
Many Babies With Developmental Delays are Untreated
A program in California kept track of the medical care and health outcomes of 5,000 kids who had once been hospitalized in a NICU. All of the kids were considered to be at risk for developing special needs. Each child was eligible for three follow up visit with a specialist. The new study found doctors were not referring all of the children who were eligible for early intervention services.
One in Three Young Adults With Autism are Unemployed
One out of every three young adults who has an autism spectrum disorder is unemployed. Even worse, they have absolutely no paid work experience at all, and they also do not have any college or technical school experience. Things need to change to prevent the same outcome with the next generation of kids who have autism.
A Guide Dog Named Coastie
Guide dogs in training are supposed to have the same rights as working guide dogs. They are supposed to be allowed to accompany their trainer into public places. A women who was training a guide dog was denied access to a festival. She turned this into a teachable moment, and there is now a guide dog puppy named “Coastie”.
Where to Find a Special Needs Playground
It’s nice for kids to be able to go outside and enjoy a playground. Unfortunately, not all playgrounds are designed for kids who have special needs. Here is a list of playgrounds that were designed to allow kids who have disabilities to play along side kids who don’t have disabilities.
