Spring Break: College Years

The air from the cold, crisp winter is beginning to slowly disappear and the winter clothing is being packed back up into boxes till next year. BUT the one item of clothing that is not being packed away is a bathing suit!

That’s right; colleges and universities all around the US have begun their escape from Midterms and Essays to break into the warm sun of Spring Break!!!

Made popular by the media like MTV, Spring Break for college students has gotten way out of control. From college students being taped several hours a day to create the movie, “Cancun,” to MTV’s coverage at five different resorts; Spring Break has become the get-aways of all escapes.

Parents are concerned with uninhibited behavior by their barely young adult aged students. From underage drinking (though legal age to drink in many overseas countries is 18) to drug experimentation; parents fear a phone call during this week of relaxing, partying, and mayhem.

Although many college students participate in the traditional “going away for Spring Break” ritual, there are many places to visit on vacation that do not participate in such wild behavior. For example, Montego Bay, Jamaica is where the party goers hang out but on the other side of the island is Ocho Rios which allows rest, relaxation, and fun without the worry.

Another place is St. Marteen or any of the US or British Virgin Islands. All are south enough in the crystal, turquoise blue Atlantic Ocean to have sunny and warm weather for the entire week, but again without the mayhem.

Everyone understands that college is a stressful and takes a lot of discipline and Spring Break allows total relaxation before the second half of the Spring semester. Just think and be careful before your parents get the phone call that they need to wire money to get you out of jail.

Please, during this years Spring Break, take it easy.
