Spring Fling

Today, the seasonal aisles of Target, Wal-Mart and Kmart were packed with people stocking up on post-Easter deals. In addition, I can personally attest that Hobby Lobby and Michaels made a killing by reducing their Easter-themed scrapbooking supplies by 50 percent. By the time I got to Michaels this morning, all of the merchandise had been thoroughly picked over. Still, I was able to snag an Eater/Spring-themed scrapbook kit for less than 10 bucks.

I am not a huge fan of scrapbook kits, as they often contain materials I already own. What’s more, you don’t get the chance to customize the look of kit layouts as much as when you are working with individual supplies. However, the kit I purchased came with coordinating paper, stickers, brads, word decals, ribbons, and tags; all of which I can use to design several spring-themed page designs. In addition, if I have some leftover generic-type material, such as the solid-colored paper, I will be able to use it on other layouts.

You can get more bang for your buck when shopping at post-holiday sales by purchasing items that you can use on more than one type of layout. For example, at today’s “Day after Easter Sale” there were several scrapbooking kits on clearance, including a pretty floral-theme set. The kit was relatively generic in that it contained scrapbooking elements which contained a plethora of floral designs, as well as butterflies, birds, garden accents and paisley swirls. While most people associate the designs with spring, you could certainly use the materials to embellish summer, birthday, Mother’s Day or anniversary layouts too. The trick is to see how much of the kit’s contents can be used in other scrapbook designs. If you are able to use half of the flower stickers in a spring or Easter-themed layout and save the rest to decorate your garden-loving mother’s birthday memory album, you can save substantially at post-holiday sales.
