If I look really, really close I can spot a blade or two of grass under the pile of snow that is blanketing our front yard. I guess spring must be on its way. In Wisconsin spring typically arrives in late May and lasts for about 20 days… but who’s counting.
Take it from me; you don’t have to be running around without a jacket, snipping fresh tulips from your backyard and humming along with the birds to get psyched about scrapbooking the first season of the year. Forecasters are predicting another three inches of snow will fall on my driveway tonight, just as we are supposed to spring forward an hour, but that’s not stopping me from prepping my 2011 spring layouts.
This year I am planning to go floral. In years past I have used pastel colored paper and embellished with stripes and other spring-related patterns, such as butterflies and plaid, but this year it’s all about the flowers. I was able to snag a variety of floral print paper and embellishments at an end of the season sale at my local scrapbook store last year and I have been anxiously waiting to put my discounted items to good use. My prize find is scrapbook paper featuring distressed Japanese floral designs. The paper came as part of a kit and offers a variety of prints that range from large flowers to tiny cherry blossoms.
I also purchased a kit to make vintage floral print paper. It includes antique-looking floral patterned paper with peonies and roses. You just add the paper to the book, and then place a piece of acid-free vellum over it and spray on adhesive. You can achieve the same old-world look by crumpling a piece of floral print scrapbook paper, flattening it and then lightly brushing brown ink wash over the surface. When ink wash dries, press the paper with an iron set to its lowest temperature, and it will look well-worn.
